Khortlan Becton, Lisa Freeman, and Abbey Labrecque – The Commuter Collective: A Public Theology and Racial Justice Collaboration with Nashville Freedom Schools
This Collective collaborated with the Nashville Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools to transform public advertisement space into public art space on Nashville commuter buses. Their objective was/is to encourage and empower commuters to engage the questions that arise from the radical presentation of diverse experience of those marginalized by systems of racial injustice in a positive way.
Fenwick Broyard, III – The Theological is Political
Features the mobile delivery of a pre-designed curriculum to church groups and campaign staff in the deep south. The curriculum will help participants understand the nature of public and political theology to better understand how public policy is shaped through the lens of race and the intersection between race, religion, and politics.
Lauren Tillman – Writing Program for Children of Color
Tillman set up a writing program to teach and empower students to help them understand the power of their stories and to publish the stories of Black youth from kindergarten to high school by working with the Children’s Defense Fund’s Nashville Freedom School and Gideon’s Army (this group seeks to act collectively for all children to eliminate the root causes of the prison pipeline, save children from death and incarceration and guide them on a secure path to success). The children authored 6 bound volumes this summer.
